Identity, Trauma, & Recovery
In-Person Therapy in Orlando, FL & Telehealth Across Florida, California, and Ontario.
Unburdening the Past. Reclaiming Your Whole Self.
Surviving isn't the same as living. When past trauma, minority stress, or systemic oppression keep your nervous system on high alert, even daily life can feel exhausting. You don't have to navigate recovery in isolation or shrink who you are to heal. We provide an affirming, trauma-informed space to help you step out of survival mode and reconnect with your authentic self.
"A safe space for identity exploration when fitting in has cost you too much of yourself."
— Calming Tides Therapy
Who We Support
If you often find yourself thinking, "I should be over this by now," or feeling exhausted from constantly holding up your guard, you are in the right place. Trauma isn't only caused by major life crises. It also builds up over time from the daily pressure of existing in environments where you don't feel safe, seen, or supported.
Our practice specializes in supporting individuals navigating:
Masking Exhaustion & Burnout: Feeling drained from hyper-analyzing social interactions, adapting your behavior, voice, or presentation, or hiding your neurodivergent traits and authentic self just to fit in or feel safe.
Minority Stress & Identity Trauma: Navigating religious trauma, purity culture, family rejection, microaggressions, homophobia, transphobia, and the unique fatigue of holding multiple marginalized identities.
Evolving Self-Discovery & Transition: Unpacking late-in-life realizations about your ADHD, autism, gender, sexuality, or non-monogamous desires—and figuring out how to rebuild around who you actually are.
Cultural & Generational Friction: Balancing family expectations and cultural obligations with your personal values, boundaries, and authentic queer identity.
Complex & Relational Trauma (C-PTSD): Healing from long-term emotional neglect, boundary violations, gaslighting, or growing up in unpredictable environments where you often felt like you were "walking on eggshells."
Boundary Grief: Processing the guilt, sadness, and fear that come with setting boundaries with family, religious communities, or social circles—allowing you to honor your needs and step into your authentic truth.
Health Status & Harm Reduction: Receiving stigma-free support around chronic health conditions, HIV status, substance use, or body changes—honoring your autonomy every step of the way.
Our Clinical Approach
Therapy shouldn’t feel like a rigid one-size-fits-all approach to care. We combine evidence-based, depth, somatic, relational, and cognitive tools to support both your mind and your nervous system.
Internal Family Systems (IFS) & Parts Work: We help you identify, understand, and gently unburden protective parts of yourself—like your inner critic, people-pleasing tendencies, or emotional numbness—that developed to keep you safe.
Somatic & Nervous System Regulation: Trauma and stress live in the body. We offer somatic tools to help you release stored tension, regulate your nervous system, and build a sense of safety from the inside out.
CBT & DBT-Informed Skills: We provide you with practical tools to manage intense overwhelm, interrupt anxiety and overthinking, and stay grounded when distress hits.
Relational & Psychodynamic Therapy: We explore your attachment style and how past experiences shape how you connect, trust, and protect yourself—helping you heal old relational wounds and build truly secure, fulfilling connections.
Harm Reduction & Client-Led Recovery: You are the expert on your own life. We support your unique recovery and wellness goals—whether that means moderation, abstinence, or safer coping strategies—without pressure, shame, or forced timelines.
What Healing Looks Like
Healing isn’t about fixing what’s “broken” — it’s about unburdening who you’ve had to be in order to survive. Through compassionate care, our work together helps you:
Step Out of Survival Mode: Help your nervous system recognize that past threats have passed so you can feel grounded, steady, and present in your daily life.
Build Internal Trust & Self-Compassion: Transform internalized shame into deep self-acceptance, learning to treat yourself with grace instead of harsh self-criticism.
Establish Clear, Confident Boundaries: Protect your time and energy while expressing your needs in relationships—without guilt or fear of abandonment.
Live Authentically On Your Own Terms: Reclaim joy, bodily autonomy, and aligned identity, free from the pressure to mask or shrink who you are.
